Moving Checklist

Moving is an exciting time! There is so much to look forward to- a new home, a new community, and new friends. At the same time, there are a lot of details to stay on top of. We hope this moving checklist helps make reaching your destination as smooth as possible.


As soon as you know you are moving:
[  ] Make an inventory of everything to be moved. Decide which items to donate or sell.

[  ] Get moving company estimates in writing and select mover. If moving yourself, reserve a truck. They are often booked up months in advance.


Four weeks prior to move:
[  ] Purchase bubble wrap, tape, boxes, and other moving supplies.

[  ] Begin packing starting with seldom used items.

[  ] Contact insurance agent to discuss coverage throughout move and to transfer policies on home and cars. Remember to bring receipt for new home insurance to closing.

[  ] Fill out change of address form with postal service at  www.usps.com or your local post office. 

Notify and obtain records. Ask for referrals if applicable.

      [] credit card companies     [] lenders     [] publications     [] friends and relatives   

[  ] Out of town purchasers obtain permission to move car and any other possessions that are not fully paid for.

[  ] Finalize arrangements with movers. Discuss insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, and time and method of expected payment.

[  ] Check registration procedures for enrolling children in school. Have records and transcripts transferred. Obtain statements of academic achievement. 


Two weeks prior to move:

Notify utilities of final date of possession and provide them with your new address.

[  ] Establish utility services for your new home 

[  ] Return borrowed items and retrieve loaned items.

[  ] Make arrangements for pets and plants.

Discontinue service on:
     [] route deliveries     [] cleaning     [] water softener     [] newspapers     [] laundry


One week prior to move:
[  ] Confirm arrangements with movers. Plan to carry cash, valuables, and important documents with you.

[  ] Set aside enough clothing and toiletries for transit and moving-in period.

[  ] Set aside boxes of items you will need immediately upon arrival- food, utensils, towels, toilet paper, paper towels soap, light bulbs, and cleaning supplies. Clearly mark boxes.

[  ] Clean out cupboards. Give away or begin disposing of food and flammable items.

[  ] Note any dents and scratches on furniture.

[  ] Notify your bank and transfer or close checking, savings, and safety deposit box. Order checks with your new address.

[  ] Refill prescriptions

[  ] Conclude any financial matters related to the sale or purchase of your home.


A few days prior to move:
[  ] Defrost freezer

[  ] Make arrangements to pay movers, if you have not already done so. 


Moving Day
At your old home:
[  ] Instruct packers on fragile items.

[  ] Confirm delivery time and address with driver.

[  ] Oversee movers. Do not leave the home until they have left.

[  ] Leave keys, garage door openers, warranties, and manuals in the home for the new owners.

[  ] Set out trash/arrange for pick up if necessary.

[  ] Make a final check of entire house before leaving especially closets, vanities, attic and basement. 

[  ] Secure house by closing blinds and locking windows and doors.


At your new home:
[  ] Supervise movers as they unload. Set aside moving receipts to keep for tax purposes.

[  ] Check pilot lights on stove, water heater, and furnace.

[  ] Install new batteries in smoke detector.

[  ] Ask postal carrier for mail held prior to your arrival.


After your move: 
[  ] Register cars as soon as possible to avoid penalty when getting new license plates. Also obtain drivers license with new address.

[  ] Visit city hall and register to vote.

[  ] Get pet licenses
